An underground Peruvian tomb revealed a fetus-like 1,000-year-old mummy

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a 1,000-year-old mummy at the Cajamarquilla site. The researchers found the mummy in a fetal position, bound by rope, and discovered it.




Cajamarquilla was a bustling metropolis located on the right bank of the Rmac river about 16 miles (25 kilometers) inland at the time the mummy was buried, experts said in a statement. It was a destination where coastal and mountainous Peru people engaged in trade. According to the experts, there may have been over 10,000 people living in the city at the time.




According to the statement, the well-preserved mummy was discovered in an underground tomb with a seven-step staircase going down to it. Researchers discovered a male mummy who died between the ages of 18 and 22 and whose body had been wrapped in rope, a method customary at the time for people living in mountainous areas near Cajamarquilla.




In addition to the mummy's remains, researchers unearthed the remains of a dog and an Andean guinea pig, as well as corn and other vegetable remains archaeology professor Pieter Van Dalen Luna said in a separate statement. Researchers believe the buried man was the son of a wealthy merchant who died between 1,200 and 800 years ago.




After his burial, relatives of his family would make offerings at his tomb. Van Dalen Luna told CNN that once the body is deposited in the tomb, "there are constant events and activities." Mollusks are among the offerings left by their descendants for many years. Llama bones were found outside the tomb, which he believes were cooked by visitors as an offering.




As of today, the mummy can be shown in a museum at the National University of San Marcos. The mummy is still being studied. At the time of publication, Van Dalen Luna had not responded to calls for comment.
