Rick Schwartz, an animal care supervisor and national spokesperson at the San Diego Zoo, likened the kangaroo's pouch to a hooded sweater worn backward. The sweatshirt's hood represents the pouch, and the mother's muscles are used to open and seal the pouch. She can open it up quite a bit, according to Schwartz.

Despite the absence of fur, the pouch's lining mimics kangaroo skin texture. Said Schwartz: It's soft and akin to the skin on a person's wrist. There are four milk ducts in the pouch. At the end of the 32nd or 33rd day of pregnancy, a female kangaroo gives birth to a joey through her vaginal canal. Baby joeys are about the size of jellybeans, and they weigh less than one gram. They crawl inside their mother's pouch by using their forelimbs. Schwartz says it stays in the baby's throat for around three and a half to four months after latching on to an extended teat.

Schwartz estimates that it takes the joey about four and a half to five months to emerge from its pouch and begin its exploration, always remaining near its mother. With time, the joey starts to venture further and for more extended periods, and around the 8-month mark, they become genuinely adventurous. At around 10 to 12 months, the joey can no longer return to its pouch.

The joey defecates inside the pouch because it spends months there before exiting. The joey tracks soil later in development because it is coming and going to investigate, Schwartz says. Mama kangaroos need to get their act together and clean up the house. To clean the pouch, she uses her tongue to scrape out the dirt and feces, either around a tiny joey or kicking out an older one while she works.

Only one joey can be born at a time to a kangaroo mother. The animal's body will delay implanting the embryo into the uterus if it is not in the ideal environment to rear a child, such as a drought. Schwartz explained that once the embryo has rested for some time, it awakens, and the mother begins the process of pregnancy.

He said that as many as four offspring could be born to a single kangaroo mother over one year or longer. When the first joey is a few months old and has spent some time outside the pouch, her body will postpone the implantation of the second embryo. He asserted that she could make milk suitable for an 8-month-old, while the other teat can produce milk ideal for a newborn.
