The 79-year-old actor, Alan Gosling, is said to be OK but lonely.
Alan Gosling, a 79-year-old man from Devon, England, just became the first person in the United Kingdom to contract the H5N1 type of bird flu, according to DevonLive.com.
Buckfastleigh resident Gosling fed a large flock of ducks outside his home for some time before bringing in 20 of them to keep as pets. In December 2021, Gosling noticed that some of the outside flock's ducks had become ill. After DEFRA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) tested the birds, they discovered they had H5N1 avian influenza. The entire flock was killed as soon as Christmas Day, including Gosling'. Twenty home ducks, according to The Guardian.
Several types of bird flu were tested on Gosling, and he tested positive for H5N1. In quarantine at his home, he says he is "perfectly fine but terribly lonely," according to the Mid-Devon Advertiser.
Daughter-in-law Ellesha Gosling told DevonLive that the last few weeks had been "hell" for the Gosling family. The ducks were like family to him, and he saw them all slaughtered.
Avian influenza H5N1 is most commonly seen in birds, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that it can cause serious illness or death in humans when it does make its way to them. According to health officials, H5N1 has "pandemic potential" if the virus mutates in a way that allows it to travel freely between individuals. The strain has never been found to propagate continuously throughout a population.
According to a story in The Guardian, a person in southwest England tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian flu on Thursday (Jan. 6). However, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) did not divulge the individual's name at the time. There have only been a handful of cases in the UK of avian flu being transmitted from bird to human, according to a UKHSA press release.
According to Mike Tildesley, a University of Warwick professor of infectious disease modeling, "this is definitely going to be major news, but the crucial point is that human infections with H5N1 are really rare and they nearly invariably come as a result of direct, long-term interaction with poultry." No proof of H5N1 transmission from person to person has been found; thus, I do not consider it a substantial risk to public health at this time.
The UK Health and Safety Authority (UKHSA) acknowledged this "Everyone who came into touch with the individual has been traced and there is no evidence that the sickness has spread to anyone else. Currently, the person is doing fine and avoiding contact with others "Reports came in from DevonLive.
DevonLive and The Guardian have further information on the case.
