Quadriceps


They are among the most powerful muscles in the body and are placed on the front and side of the thigh in the upper leg. The quadriceps femoris muscle has four parts: the rectus femoris, the vast lateral, and the vast medialis.


Researchers from Europe's European Journal of Applied Physiology say that studies have shown that the vast medialis and lateralis muscles are most active in phase one of the 'propulsion,' when the crank – the component that attaches the pedal to the bike – moves from top dead center to the bottom or an angle of 180°.


It was revealed that the highest activation point for the two vastii muscles is 80.8°, which is less than halfway through the propulsion section of the pedal stroke. According to the research, the vastii are activated later than the rectus femoris, located in the center of the front of the thigh.


Many cyclists, especially the more regular and experienced ones, use cleats – sometimes known as clipless pedals – or the more traditional toe clips to secure their feet to the pedals. One study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine discovered that the rectus femoris is engaged differently when connected to the pedals: According to a study published in the magazine, riders who employ toe clips engage that muscle 20 degrees earlier in the pedal stroke.


Hamstrings

Research in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology found that the biceps femoris, the third hamstring muscle, is engaged throughout the pedal stroke.


Anterior tibial phalanges


Regarding cycling, the tibialis anterior is an "important muscle," according to the Wake Forest School of Medicine, which published research in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy . Your shin is covered with it.
