No, is the quick answer. But before answering that question, we need to establish a few facts.

A daddy longlegs is what you're referring to. An entomologist from the University of California, Riverside, Rick Vetter, said this. It's a myth that Vetter has been dispelling for years.

At least three different species are referred to as "daddy longlegs" colloquially, but only one of them is a real spider.

It is also known as a Pholcidae family cellar spider. It possesses eight eyes, fangs, venom channels, and glands like other spiders.

Another spider of the Opiliones family is the harvestman. In contrast to spiders, these creatures have only two eyes and no fangs or venom glands.

Live Science quoted harvestmen's Vetter saying, "They have small grabby mouthparts.". "They have the appearance of little pinchers. Most of the time, they're employed to break apart dead prey or trash."

Crane flies are a member of the Tipulidae family. Because of its lengthy body and wings, this is a mosquito-sized bug, not an arachnid. The only difference between them and mosquitoes is that they can't bite you. This is because many crane fly species lack any mouthparts. Their adult stage lasts only a few days, giving them enough time to breed and deposit eggs.

They aren't just a single species. They have venom, though. Crane flies don't have any. Hence this myth is untrue to them. Both harvestmen and harvest women contain poison, not venom.

In contrast to venom, which must be injected into the intended victim, poison can be administered orally or topically. To protect themselves from parasites and predators, harvestmen spray or cover themselves in an offensive-smelling chemical combination when disturbed. Despite its ability to kill spiders and other insects, this is not the most poisonous poison in the world.

The only remaining spiders are the basement spiders. They can bite humans. They have fangs like the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa), known for its potentially lethal bite on humans, according to Vetter's statement. However, the parallels end here.

According to Vetter, the toxic effects of pholcid spiders on humans have not been documented. When I heard about it, I thought, "That's not that bad." It's not the most poisonous spider in the world," said one scientist who studied it.

Analysis of the venom has shown this to be accurate, as well. After injecting mice with venom from either cellar spiders or black widow spiders on a 2004 "Mythbusters" episode, arachnologist Charles Kristensen's findings were detailed in an article published in 2019. Venom from a black widow was far more potent than any other species.

Why, therefore, has this myth endured for so long if it is untrue?

That's an excellent question, and I don't know the solution to it, Vetter replied. "I think it's because someone said something once, and there wasn't enough information to disprove it. As a result, the cycle never ends. And terrifying stories are a favorite of many individuals."
