1. The most rigid substance in the human body is tooth enamel.

We learned this exciting information about teeth from Dr David Rice of IgniteDDS: Enamel, the exterior covering of your teeth, is the hardest thing your body can produce. Teeth are the only component of your body that cannot mend themselves, despite having a tough outer shell.

2. Each person's teeth are one-of-a-kind

Dr Hanna Kinsella explained the following: "Like your fingerprint, each set of teeth is unique. There are no two identical sets ". Dentists have used dental imprints in several high-profile trials, most notably the trial of serial killer Ted Bundy. According to the Dental Research Journal, dental records can still play a significant part in postmortem identification, even though some people doubt the reliability of the technology employed to link criminals' teeth prints.

3. You wash your teeth around once a year.

For best results, brush your teeth for four minutes daily, according to Dr Alina Lee Lane. In the morning and night, she advised Live Science to brush for two minutes each time. That equates to more than 24 hours of brushing time per year, assuming a 365-day year.

4. The ability of your teeth to sense cold is a sign of life or death.

"Teeth are 'alive' because of their blood arteries and nerves. The term "dead tooth" refers to a tooth that has lost its ability to sense cold. "Dr Lane explained this to Live Science. It is common for dentists to conduct tests on uncomfortable teeth to establish what the problem is if you experience pain during testing to see if your teeth can feel the cold.

5. Changes in the dentin can cause teeth to seem yellowish.

Stains are usually the first thing that springs to mind when someone mentions yellow teeth. Even though foods, drinks, and other substances like tobacco can stain teeth, this isn't the only way your teeth can turn a different shade. Dentin is the layer of your tooth behind the enamel, and it can change colour following root canals. Dentin can darken your tooth's enamel if it changes colour and shows through.

6. You can't fix your teeth.

According to Dr Rice: "A tooth is the only portion of our bodies that can't cure itself." Even while your teeth's enamel is quite durable, it's still important to take care of it to keep your smile looking and feeling its best for as long as possible. According to an article in the American Family Physician, pulpal inflammation (frequently caused by caries), damaged teeth, and trauma are all significant reasons why people need to see a dentist outside of their routine checkups.

7. It was in the 18th century that braces were first developed.

According to medical historians, Dentist Pierre Fauchard invented the first braces in the early 1800s. Modern arch-expansion methods have their roots in the 'bandolet.' Etienne Bourdet, a dentist to the King of France at the time, endorsed the gadgets made of silver or gold.

8. There are up to six wisdom teeth in a person.

"Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in your mouth. Four wisdom teeth are common in adulthood, "Explained Dr Lane: It's wonderful to have 0, 1, 2, 3, or even 6, as long as you're healthy," she continued. If you have a large number of wisdom teeth, they may have difficulty finding room in your mouth. According to Lane, "many people's jaws are too narrow to accommodate wisdom teeth, so they don't emerge naturally along with the rest of your teeth."

9. Bacterial species found in plaques number in the hundreds

Between 200 and 300 distinct kinds of bacteria can be found in plaque. One kind of bacteria, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), is the most common cause of tooth decay.
