They're doing a great job parenting their first chick, which they hatched at New York's Rosamond Gifford Zoo from a same-sex pair.
Elmer and Lima are two male Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) that were given an egg to incubate because the parents of the egg frequently break their eggs. On January 1, a baby penguin came out of its egg, and its parents were the same gender.
The zoo director, Ted Fox, stated in a statement that "Elmer and Lima, who are doing a terrific job," are still caring for the baby.
Elmer and Lima started a family by constructing a nest for the coming breeding season. Although they didn't have any real eggs, zookeepers saw that they were acting like breeding penguins and decided to test their parenting skills using a fake egg.
In the presence of a dummy egg, "some pairings would perch on the nest but leave the egg to the side and not incubate it correctly," Fox explained. Elmer and Lima "passed with flying colors" in every category of egg care, so we know we can trust them to be good foster parents. The zoo replaced the fake egg with a real one, and it successfully hatched.
Using penguins of the same sex as foster parents is nothing new for zoos. Several zoos have successfully raised chicks using male and female pairings, including the Central Park Zoo in New York and the Oceanogràfic Valencia Aquarium in Spain. A previous post on Live Science said that two male black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in the DierenPark Amersfoort zoo in the Netherlands stole an egg from a nearby pair to raise themselves.
Male and female penguins frequently form couples. According to the Museum Studies Blog at Tufts University in Massachusetts, male and female penguins share the same obligations regarding rearing chicks; therefore, there's no reason why same-sex pairings can't perform all the responsibilities of parenting.
Fox said same-sex penguin couples are a great example of how children can be raised well in non-traditional families.
