Aliens aren't being cited as a possible explanation for this.
A newly established Pentagon agency will investigate UFO sightings, but longtime UFO aficionados remain suspicious.
Some UFOlogists are outraged that the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security has been given responsibility for the new "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" program, according to NBC, since they don't have faith in the military to uncover the truth about the phenomenon.
Ron James, an investigator for the non-profit Mutual UFO Network, told NBC News: "This is an area where there is a proven history of secrecy, and anything lacking in fresh openness regarding information is prone to more, maybe excessive control."
The National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law in December, called for the "formation of office, organizational structure, and authorities to address the mysterious aerial phenomenon." The subject has gained increased attention in recent years following the release of footage by U.S. military pilots that appear to show objects flying at unimaginable speeds and doing complicated aerial maneuvers.
Sightings of inexplicable technology may or may not be genuine. Earthbound threats are the primary concern of U.S. authorities, who fear that foreign nations may be developing advanced aviation technology right under the nose of the U.S. military.
Our national security operations depend on aerial superiority, and these occurrences challenge our dominance," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, who led the bipartisan bill. It's time for the United States to take charge of these airborne phenomena and figure out if they're the work of a foreign nation or something else.
On the other hand, many of the sightings may have non-technological causes. When the Perseid meteor shower occurred in July 2021, a "bright green" UFO was seen over Canada. Meteorites burning up in the atmosphere can occasionally cause bright-green streaks. A bright "doughnut" UFO spotted by a skywatcher in Switzerland may have been captured by an out-of-focus lens. It's also possible that the seemingly physics-defying footage obtained by U.S. Navy pilots, which appears to show extraordinarily fast UFOs, results from an optical illusion known as parallax, which enhances the apparent velocity of an item by making it appear to be moving much faster than it is.
Debunker Mick West told NBC News that Pentagon officials may have received the press and political support they needed to carry out activities that they probably wanted to do anyway, but not necessarily because military leaders believe E.T. is trying to make contact with humanity.
As West explained to NBC, the bill's content appears to represent the concerns of those who believe in the alien idea. There are "somewhat ludicrous hoops" that the military now has to go through to get the job done.
This means that Fox Mulder will not be working in the office. Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMS) is the name given to the new attempt to investigate such accusations, according to the Pentagon (AOIMSG).
Defense Department officials wrote in announcing the program that "the AOIMSG will coordinate efforts across the Department and the broader U.S. government to detect, identify and attribute objects of interest [sic] in Special Use Airspace (SUA), as well as to assess and mitigate any associated threats to flight safety and national security." We evaluate every report we receive about a possible intrusion by any aerial object, known or unknown since every report is taken very seriously by the Department of Defense.
