Since 1971, this enormous crater in the desert has been continuously engulfed in flames.
Since 1971, the 'Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan's desert have been blazing.
For the past 50 years, the "Gates of Hell" has been burning in the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan unabated, according to the country's leader.
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov urged officials to "find a solution to extinguish the fire" in an appearance on Turkmenistan's state television channel on January 8, citing concerns for the health of residents living near the flaming crater and lost business opportunities, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to AFP, Berdymukhamedov remarked, "We are losing valuable natural resources that we could get large revenues for and use for enhancing the well-being of our people."
What are the 'Gates of Hell', and where do they lead? The Darvaza gas crater, a term far less ominous, is another name for the Gates of Hell, a gaping chasm in the desert about 230 feet (70 meters) wide and 65 feet (20 meters) deep.
According to AFP, a Soviet drilling effort to produce gas began excavating the hole in 1971. In a former Soviet republic, Turkmenistan, The ground disintegrated beneath the drill rig, causing it to fall into a natural gas cavern. It was estimated that the gas within the crater would only burn for a few weeks. Therefore geologists decided to set the hole on fire.
AFP reports that the Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan has become a popular tourist attraction in the 50 years since they were first built. A video of President Berdymukhamedov doing doughnuts as he drove through the desert near the hole in a rally car in 2019 helped raise the crater's internet reputation.
This flaming photo op in the desert has turned Berdymukhamedov off, but his economic problems may be a clue. According to Vice.com, Turkmenistan has the world's fourth-largest natural gas deposit, and the country's economy is heavily reliant on gas exports, according to Vice.com.
In 2010, President Berdymukhamedov instructed scientists to stop the Hell Gates, but they failed. So much the better this time.
